Black Diamond Spot Headlamp Review

The Black Diamond Spot Headlamp is a small and convenient piece of camping gear that makes it easy to see what you’re doing in the dark. You may have seen people wearing these to help light the way when caving or orienteering , as it allows them to operate hands-free. But the reality is these headlamps are useful everywhere and anywhere outdoors.

Setup and Design FeaturesBlack Diamond Spot Headlamp Review

There is nothing fiddly when it comes to setting up the Black Diamond Headlamp. All you have to do is take it out the box, check you have the 3 x AAA batteries, and adjust the strap to fit nice and snug around your head.

One of the features that separates this headlamp from others on the market is how powerful it is. It knocks out a massive 130 lumens, anyone who understands lumens will know how powerful this is, it’s incredible really. It also has several different settings to toggle through, you can use 1 triple power LED, 2 single power white LED’s, or 2 single power LED’s.

This headlamp uses what they call Power Tap technology. This basically means it’s quick and easy to flick through the settings to find the kind of light you want. This is exactly what you want from a headlamp, no fuss and ease of use. They are designed to let you go about your business without needing hands, so quick and easy settings get’s a thumbs up from me.

One of the other areas of concern is always the headband. The Black Diamond is 100% cotton, so you can’t ask for any more than that. Don’t hold back using this in all weathers too, it’s resistant to rain and splashing, it’s well built and comes from a great brand in Black Diamond.

There is also a few different colors to choose from. There’s a green, black, red, blue, adn white. So not being able to match it with the rest of your camping gear isn’t going to be an excuse.

Comparison Information

It makes sense to look at the Black Diamond next to another very powerful headlamp, like the Coast HL7 LED headlamp that I reviewed recently. The Coast takes the edge on power, knocking out up to 196 lumens. There are few that can match it on outright power, if it’s all out power you’re after you should take a closer look at the Coast.

As far as reputation, design, and looks go, these two are neck-and-neck. The extra power isn’t going to make a huge difference, I’d take a close look at the two of these and decide on which one really takes your fancy.

Pros

  • More than powerful enough at 130 lumens
  • Well-designed and functional controls to toggle through settings
  • Reliable brand

Cons

  • It’s fiddly getting to the batteries

Insider Tips

A lot of people have trouble figuring out how to open the battery compartment. The design does not make it easy to figure out, but it’s simple when you know how of course. The easiest way to access the batteries is to turn the headlamp upside down, then use your thumb to prise open the edge of the compartment.

The battery housing pivots down and doesn’t actually come away from the main unit. You have to be quite gentle with it not to break the clips, but once you’ve done this once it will make sense.
