These poles are well designed from top to bottom as you’d expect from a company like Kelty. Hard to find a real fault with them.

I reviewed the Black Diamond Alpine Ergo Cork Trekking Poles not long ago. Looking at these two poles side-by-side there are a few differences to separate them but all things considered they are very similar. Which being as they are two of the market leaders, it’s no surprise.

The Black Diamond’s are actually slightly lighter at just 18 oz. But the difference between 20 oz and 18 oz is barely noticeable. You also have a little extra range on the them too over the Kelty Range. Only 2” either end, but it’s the little things that make all the difference. So I’d say the Black Diamond Alpine’s get the nod for being slightly more user-friendly.

Insider Tips

The carbide tips are not replaceable on the Range. These are the tips on the bottom of the poles that are designed to give maximum grip, and of course are taking the brunt of all the work. They do come with plastic covers that are replaceable however, so look after these plastic tips and keep an eye out for wear and tear. These are the only replaceable parts as far as I can see. The handles are really robust and should last the lifetime of the poles.
