Sea to Summit Aeros Premium vs Ultralight

Sea to Summit Aeros Premium vs Ultralight

If you’re anything like me, you value a good night’s sleep just as much as a hard day hiking or backpacking.

This is why I don’t take choosing a backpacking pillow lightly, and neither should you.

In this article, I’m looking at and breaking down two of the best selling, and best quality backing pillows on the market – The Sea to Summit Aeros Premium vs Ultralight.

So, if you’re looking at your battered old camping pillow, or just don’t have one yet, read on for everything you need to know to make the right choice between these two awesome backpacking pillows.

Some Background on Sea to Summit

There is a really interesting story behind the company that deserves a mention.

The company’s name came about because one of the co-founders of Sea to Summit, Tim Macartney-Snape actually climbed Mt. Everest not once, but twice.

With his second expedition being from sea level, all the way up to the summit at some 8,848 meters.

An incredible feat, not only is this something that not many have done, it adds a wealth of credence to his judgment and expertise in designing and putting his company name to survival and camping products.

Sea to Summit continues to grow as a brand. Their name is associated with some of the best camping products on the market, and in my experience, I’ve always found their gear to be top notch.

The Premium, as you can probably guess is the more expensive of the two. But only by a few bucks so the price isn’t going to be a decision breaker here.

The material is a brushed 50D polyester, this makes the pillow lightweight, very soft and comfortable without a pillowcase, and durable so it’ll last years with a little care.

Don’t worry about needing plenty of puff as it comes fitted with a multifunction valve. This makes inflating quick and easy and you can adjust the firmness to exactly the feel you want.

This combined with the curve in the design makes this a perfect backpacking pillow for side sleepers as well as back sleepers.

The complaint with a lot of standard inflatable pillows is that they only suit back sleepers. So this is a pretty cool feature worth mentioning.

Weighing around just 2 oz this pillow lives up to its name as the Ultralight. The main drawback to a lot of lightweight pillows is the quality of materials used to reduce the weight, not the case here as Sea to Summit used 20 denier polyester for a lovely soft feel.

The multifunction valve means inflating, deflating, and adjusting is a breeze. The seams are reinforced and the quality of construction is as you’d expect from Sea to Summit, quality.

It has curved internal battles to provide a soft landing for your head at night. It’s available in a few different colors and sizes too, so some options for those who like to color match their accessories.

With a wealth of positive feedback from happy customers there shouldn’t be anything holding you back – if you’re looking for a lightweight travel pillow this is it.

Why Should You Choose the Ultralight?

The ultralight is the best pick for those who really want to keep weight to a minimum as save as much on space as they can.

This is about as good as a camping pillow gets for its size and weight. There really isn’t another choice in my opinion when it comes to the best lightweight backpacking pillow.

Key Specifications of the Ultralight

Length – 44 cm / 17’3”

Width – 32 cm / 12’6”

Height – 14 cm / 5’5”

Weight – 2.5 oz

Packed Size – 5.3 cm x 7.8 cm / 2’1” x 3’1”

Final Thoughts

Two excellent backpacking pillows designed to deal with two different types of campers. If traveling light is your main priority, then the Ultralight is the pillow for you.

It’s still comfy, great for all kinds of sleeping positions, easy to use and adjust, and won’t break the bank.

If luxury is your main priority while still getting all the features of a backpacking pillow then the Premium is going to give you good night’s sleep while backpacking or camping.
