Black Diamond Z Z-Poles Review
If you like to mountaineer, trek, or just walk across all kinds of terrains and you’ve never tried out some trekking poles you’re missing out. Good trekking poles make all forms of trekking easier on your joints and help you to maintain balance. If you haven’t used poles before, read on, these Black Diamond Z Z-Poles are pretty impressive and might be just what you’re needing.
Setup and Design Features
These poles are a little different to your run-of-the-mill trekking poles. They use something called ‘Z-Pole technology’. This is a design from Black Diamond that basically means the poles can fold to make a ‘Z’ shape and allows the poles to pack up tight and not take up much space. Most poles shorten down a little but basically take up the length of the pole in your backpack which can be a problem.
The poles snap into place and stay in place when being used. There is a Kevlar cord inside and each section locks into place very securely. It’s a really impressive design and actually makes a huge difference to a lot of people on the fence about which model of pole to choose.
Quality doesn’t really come into question with Black Diamond camping gear. They have been making a wide range of camping gear for years and have a great reputation. If you have not heard of Black Diamond, take it from me – there is no need to second guess the quality.
The grips are always another point of focus on trekking poles. You will spend a lot of time gripping them, so having comfy grips that are going to last is essential. The Z-Poles are kitted out with lightweight EVA rubber grips. You also have wrist straps that are breathable, wick away moisture, and provide that extra support that comes in handy on hill climbs.

The tips are interchangeable rubber tips so you can replace them when they are showing signs of wear. As you can see from the picture the poles look pretty slick, the blue and black is a nice color, the shafts are aluminium, and they are available in either 100cm, 110cm, 120cm, or 130cm lengths.
Comparison Information
The Kelty Range trekking poles are highly rated and great all round poles if you’re looking for other options from another manufacturer. They don’t fold down like the Z-Poles though, which is kind of a big deal if you ask me. They are awesome poles however, very sturdy, highly-rated, and something they offer that the Z-Poles do not – the ability to adjust the length. If travelling with poles that don’t fold down isn’t as issue, these are worth considering.
Pros
- Fold down to a manageable size really easily
- Locks into place and are very strong and well built
- Lightweight and comfortable to grip
Cons
- Cannot adjust the length
- Some people do not find the wrist grips very comfortable
Insider Tips
You need to be as sure as you can be on the length of poles you want. Most poles on the market are adjustable, but the Z-Poles are not. Instead, you can just buy the length you want, and they collapse down anyway so they are easy to pack up and travel with even if you go for the longest option.
Black Diamond Z Z-Poles Summary
Finding the best trekking poles doesn’t need to be difficult and Black Diamond have made the decision pretty easy here. Designing poles that collapse down and snap up to full length sets these apart from most other poles on the market.
