Pelican 45 Elite Cooler Review

There are two major players in the cooler market when it comes to all round excellent products. One is Yeti, and the other is Pelican. This Pelican 45 Elite leaves its competitors behind when it comes to an all-round finished product. pelican 45 eliteIt’s incredibly durable, reliable, well designed, and best of all comes in at a competitive price point. So let’s take a closer look at the specifics:

Setup and Design Features

Coolers are largely rated on their insulation value, and rightly so as keeping the contents cold through insulation is their main purpose. The 45 Elite holds 45Q of ice, and keeps it cold for up to 10 days. I can’t think of too many instances where this would not be long enough, so it gets a thumbs up for insulation.

The lid and handles are well designed, you don’t need to worry about these handles giving way. Which is especially important on this model as the drawback with the Pelican Elite is its weight. It weighs 35 lbs, which makes it one of the heavier coolers on the market. On the plus side this is a reflection on the quality of the construction, but it doesn’t make it any easier to carry.

Pelican are well known for manufacturing a wide range of durable boxes and cases. So it’s no real surprise how well built this model is. The press and pull latches are incredibly strong, all the plastic moulding is pretty much indestructible under normal usage, and there is a sloped drain with a tethered plug to drain excess water.

Pelican has a wide range of cases which includes these series of the elite coolers.  Click here to see other products from the manufacturer.

With the weight and construction in mind it feels like this cooler is more suited to sitting on the back of a truck and being used to service a tailgate or barbecue or similar. If you want a cooler you can carry with you to a campsite or such you may want to check out the Yeti Tundra 45 as it’s considerably lighter.

If you need a table to go with your cooler, take a look at the 4 in 1 from Coleman.  A nice diverse concept to get the most out of one table.

Insider Tips

It’s worth keeping in mind that this is a heavy cooler. 35 lbs is is a two person job, especially when loaded with food and drink. I recommend purchasing a trolley to wheel it around to make your life easier if you intend to move it around a campsite or across any distances.

It works great as cooler chest on the back of a truck or sitting next to a barbecue through, so if that’s your goal you shouldn’t pass on this.
