Rayovac Sportsman Lantern Review
Having a good lantern is essential when camping overnight. Not only are they safety items, but a lantern makes your life a lot easier. Most are available with the low price tags too so it’s an easy choice to add one to your camping gear. The Rayovac Sportsman Lantern produces a massive 240 lumens, it’s a powerful, affordable lantern. If you’re in the market for one it’s probably going to fit the bill.
Setup and Design Features
As mentioned in the opener, the Rayovac Sportsman Lantern is very powerful. It kicks out 240 lumens, which in lantern terminology is well above average. You can light up a trail while hiking, illuminate the inside of a tent, or even light up a campsite and cooking area as night draws in with ease.
There isn’t much to speak of in the way of setting up the lantern outside of taking it out of the box and putting batteries in. There are some nice little features that are worth mentioning however. For example, the bottom of the lantern is flat, opposed to having legs. So you can just sit it anywhere without having to balance it on its feet or swing legs down.
You can access the batteries by pulling the base off. The top half of the lantern also twists off, there is a bracket that then swings out to allow you to hang the lantern upside down. You can now easily hook it on a tree branch, or off the hook on your camping table.

There’s a large push button on the front that you can’t miss. With three modes to toggle between, these are low, strobe, and high settings. Another nice touch is a flashing green LED light that flashes every 5 seconds when the lantern is off. This means you can’t lose it in complete darkness.
Comparison Information
The Rayovac is in the company of powerful lanterns like the Coleman Twin LED Lantern. It’s a little smaller, and has 150 lumens less. I recommend checking out the Coleman if you want something even more powerful.
These two lanterns are big heavy units though. If you’re looking for a straight up backpacking lantern, check out the Black Diamond Apollo. It’s a lot less powerful, but it’s lightweight, easy to use, durable, and everything you want from a backpacking lantern.

Rayovac Sportsman Lantern Summary
The Rayovac has three different lighting modes. It’s designed to be simple to use and this the main selling point. There are no fiddly legs, just a firm rubber base. It’s a solid all-rounder.
It sits nicely in between the heavy hitters knocking out huge power, and the light backpacking lanterns. I can see this lantern sitting in your truck as a backup, or being used at home just as easily. Certainly worth taking a closer look.
Conclusion
The Rayovac Sportsman Lantern gets the job done. Whether you’re lighting the cooking area, reading in your tent, or lighting a trail on a hike, you can guarantee good, bright coverage. It’s good for all weather use and looks pretty cool too.
